Since leaving Washington, George and Laura Bush have settled into a new routine at home on 10141 Daria Place in Preston Hollow, an upper-class section of Dallas. Even as they write their own books and travel to give occasional speeches, such as a trip to the Southern Methodist University campus, they have also had dinner with their new neighbors.

The couple has quickly adapted to life outside the White House. They subscribe to the Dallas Morning News, which has written about their visit to local Pershing Elementary and the standing ovation they received after finishing dinner with friends at Fernando's Mexican Cuisine.

The 1.13-acre property -- valued at about $2.4 million -- is cocooned by 40 acres of private land and a trout-filled lake. Two oak trees shade the front yard. The Secret Service occupies a house next door. Some neighbors have decided to treat 10141 Daria Place as just another house in Preston Hollow, despite all indications otherwise.

Bush is focusing on writing a book -- 25,000 words so far -- that explains his presidency in detail. He believes his two terms will ultimately be judged on a series of major decisions: going to war with Iraq, selecting Dick Cheney as a running mate and directing response to Hurricane Katrina. The former president poses with Baylor cheerleaders at a NCAA basketball game between Baylor and Oklahoma.

In Washington, Bush spoke longingly of a quiet post-presidency that would allow him to bring Laura coffee in bed and meander into work around 9 a.m., but he has struggled to slow down, friends say. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Rangers' Ballpark in Arlington to open the season.
