Russian capsule carrying US space tourist Richard Garriott lands safely in Kazakhstan

A Soyuz capsule, carrying American space tourist Richard Garriott and two Russian astronauts, descends from the international space station, safely delivering the first two men to follow their fathers into space

The capsule landed at 9:37 am local time, about 55 miles north of Arkalyk in north-central Kazakhstan

Search and recovery crews flew in to extract Richard Garriott, Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko from the capsule

"What a great ride that was," said Garriott, after being greeted by his father, Owen Garriott, a retired NASA astronaut who flew on the space station Skylab in 1973. He was then examined by doctors who confirmed that everything was normal after his ten-day excursion into space

Garriot was sat next to Volkov in the capsule. The son of a cosmonaut, he beat Garriott to become the first human being to follow a parent into space when he flew up to the space station six months ago

Kononenko, who also spent six months in space, was the last out of the capsule. The head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos, Anatoly Perminov, stated that Kononenko had a tougher time than his crewmates during the descent, but was fine. It was the first space mission for all three men

Shortly after landing, the crew attended a welcoming ceremony where they donned traditional Kazakh hats

Before leaving the space station, Garriot, who created the Ultima computer game series, thanked Expedition 17 and 18 crew members for being so accommodating onboard the orbiting vessel

Garriott had spent time on the station conducting experiments and taking pictures of the Earth's surface to measure changes, just as his father did 35 years ago

The video-game entrepreneur, who has earned millions of dollars, called his journey into orbit a lifelong dream. It cost him a large portion of his personal wealth
