Thousands flee fighting in Congo 战争使成千上万人逃离刚果
Thousands of civilians have fled fresh fighting in the eastern Congo, forming long columns heading towards Goma on foot
Around 20,000 men, women and children have streamed out of the Kibumba area, where fresh fighting has flared between forces loyal to rebel general Laurent Nkunda and government troops
An estimated 1.4 million to two million civilians have been displaced by the fighting, more than a quarter of the province's population of five million
A peace deal brokered in January collapsed in August in Congo, where a 1998-2003 war and resulting humanitarian disaster have killed an estimated 5.4 million people, most through hunger and disease
Congolese Tutsi insurgents advanced towards the strategic eastern city of Goma on Monday after launching a new offensive over the weekend
The military commander of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resigned for political reasons amid the fighting
UN spokeswoman Michele Montas said that Lieutenant General Vicente Diaz de Villegas y Herreria of Spain, recently appointed Force Commander, "has indicated that for personal reasons he will not be able to continue with his assignment as planned"
The announcement followed the capture by rebel forces of ethnic Tutsi warlord Laurent Nkunda of a strategic camp in east DRC from government forces
Montas said UN chief Ban Ki-moon was "extremely concerned by the further deterioration in the security situation, and its impact on civilians"
In a related development, DRC President Laurent Kabila has named a new government of "combat and reconstruction" in a bid to pacify the giant central African country
Kabila sacked his defence and interior ministers in an apparent bid to shake up the military's response to the increasing threat posed by rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo bordering Rwanda
Crowds of protesters threw rocks outside four United Nations compounds in eastern Congo, venting outrage at what they claimed was a failure by peacekeepers to protect them from rebel forces advancing on the provincial capital of Goma
Residents are furious that the 17,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force has been unable to protect them from the rebels |
