The islandsof the Maldives, situated in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka, have beendescribed as "gem-like," "romantic" and "spectacular." They may havewon such praise because of their sparkling whitesand beaches and theirmany luxury resorts. Or perhaps the praiseis due to the colorful world beneath the ocean's surface. Whatever thereason, people leave the Maldives thrilled by the beauty they've seen.

A tropical paradise above water
  From the air, the 1,190 islands appear as green dots encircled by light-blue lagoons. Thick tropical vegetation covers the low-lying islands, which don't rise more than 2.4 m above sea level. On the ground, smooth, sandy beaches and graceful palm trees welcome island visitors.
