Castro began the Cuban revolution with a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks, Santiago de Cuba, in 1953, for which he was incacerated

By the time the '26th of July movement', headed by Castro, had arrived in Cuba in 1959, the country's dictator Fulgencio Batista, had been in power for seven years

Batista had organised a military coup, the 'sergeants' revolt', in 1933 and became president. In 1952, he overthrew President Prio Socorras and ruled as dictator until he was overthrown on January 1, 1959
