Allied Scout, Gizo, Solomon Islands, 2002
The T-shirt—a gift from a tourist—doesn't lie.
In World War II Eroni Kumana and many other Solomon Islanders served as Allied scouts, patrolling South Pacific waters in dugout canoes. In 1943 he and another guide discovered Lt. John F. Kennedy and his crew, who had been shipwrecked days before when a Japanese destroyer rammed their boat, PT-109.
Risking torture and death at the hands of the surrounding Japanese, Kumana and his partner relayed messages that would initiate the 11th-hour rescue operation by U.S. commanders who had given up the PT-109 crew for dead.
