Joe Namath, 1969
Iooss has been photographing the world's most famous athletes since 1961.

For much of his career, he has worked for Sports Illustrated. In order to create a dramatic backdrop for this magazine story on Michael Jordan, the second of many he would do in his career, Iooss had a court painted half blue, half red, unsure what color uniform the young star would show up in — home whites or road reds.
"You don't get a lot of time with guys like Woods," says Iooss. "Seven, ten minutes max. So you have to accomplish a lot in a little amount of time. And he respects that, the fact that you can perform under pressure. It's what he does every time he goes out on the course."
"Athletes like Kobe Bryant, Jordan, they're going to test you. If I say I need fifteen minutes, they'll say, 'I'll give you ten.' But if you can make it work within that time frame, they're going to respect that, and remember you next time."
Michael Phelps, 2004 and Wayne Gretzky, 1991
For the shot of Gretzky, Iooss laid on a makeshift sled and had an assistant drag him along the ice as the hockey great raced downrink. "That's not a wind machine blowing his hair," the photographer boasts, "We were going really fast."
Before this fight, the challenger angered the champion by referring to him as "Clay," the birth name that Ali had rejected.
Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor, 1966
When he started out, Iooss was one of a few photographers who set synchronized strobes high above the court. The additional wattage allows him to illuminate the entire stadium and freeze the Celtics - Lakers rivals in mid air. "Plus," he says, "Everyone smoked in those days, so the light was much softer and more diffused."
Of the tennis star, Iooss noted, "She's an incredibly powerful woman, but this shoot, for the swimsuit issue, required that we make her as sexy as possible. The heels, I think, really helped."
Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, 1965
"They sent me to cover this tournament because former President Eisenhower was going to be there. I didn't shoot so much, nothing was really going on. But I got into the clubhouse somehow and saw Palmer and Nicklaus talking, with the Larks in front of them and took a few shots. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I look at now, and just think, wow."

Steffi Graf, 1997 and Brett Favre, 2005
Many of the images in Athlete have been published before, but some have not.
"I had a few minutes to talk to Lance about this shoot the night before we were scheduled to make it," says Iooss. "I told him that I wanted to do a motorcycle, not a bicycle and that he should wear a leather jacket if he had one. He brought the jacket, which was great, but his shoes were all wrong, so I lent him my Gucci boots. When the shoot was over, he asked me if I he could keep them. I said no."
Mike Piazza, 1993
Iooss' work has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated over 300 times.
