For his newest, project Piano preserved a portion of the original Academy, which was badly damaged by the earthquake that hit the Bay Area in 1989, wrapped it in an elegant container of glass and steel, and topped it with a surprise - an undulating planted roof that will help the building to heat and cool more efficiently.

The Academy's "green roof" rises in places to accomodate the spherical planetarium and rainforest exhibits beneath it, creating a surreal landscape in the sky.
