Pioneer
Richard M. Hollingshead, Jr., a chemical company magnate, is credited with developing the idea for the drive-in theater. After experimenting with a projector, radio and screen in his own New Jersey backyard, he applied for, and received, a patent in 1933. His first drive-in (above) opened less than a month later in Pennsauken, N.J.

Long Line
Over 400 cars attended Hollingshead's opening night on June 6, 1933. The feature was Wives Beware starring Adolphe Menjou.

Growth
Though Hollingshead's initial outlet closed after a few years, his idea caught on. By the end of 1934 theaters had opened in Texas, Pennsylvania and Los Angeles (above).

At the conclusion of the Second World War, Hollywood blossomed, car culture exploded and the drive-in movie business took off.
